A Field of Cornflowers

Background: I wrote this poem to celebrate the magnificence that is the cornflower field. A brilliant blue, they are truly an awe-inspiring example of a bit of the magnificence that we could all aim to possess.

A Field of Cornflowers

I chanced upon a cornflower field

But it was not what I’d expected.

This field – a truly magnificent field –

Was brilliant as could be expected.

What varied from what I thought I’d see

Was a flurry that is now stirring me.

But where do I begin

For I was on the outside looking in?

Looking in, I expected to see blue stems

With a scent inviting relaxation.

What I saw instead were upright plants

Saying, “You’ll bask in no such invitation.”

“Go down to the running stream,” they said.

“There’s work to do at the river’s bed.”

But where was I to begin

For I was on the outside looking in?

Though, because of this revelation,

I stepped out with some trepidation.

Off to the riverbank I went

With a quickening gait

And a springing step.

There, after a moment’s contention

I bent down and stared at my reflection.

What I saw was a brilliant cornflower field

But the next part was unexpected.

This field – this truly magnificent field –

Was somehow contained in my reflection

So, where do I begin for I was on

The outside but now look within?
